App preview specifications
Overview
App previews give customers a look at your app or game's main features, functionality, and content, right on the App Store product page.
App previews are optional. You can upload up to three app previews per supported device size and language for iOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS apps. If you upload an app preview in an aspect ratio that differs from your screenshots, it appears in the “A Closer Look” section on your product page.
To create an app preview, make sure you have the following:
-
A Mac running macOS 10.10 or later, with Safari 8 or later
-
A video editor, such as iMovie or Final Cut Pro X
-
One of the following devices:
-
iPhone (iPhone with Face ID (large display), iOS 8 or later)
-
iPad (13" display, iOS 8 or later)
-
Apple TV
-
Apple Vision Pro

When you upload
-
Display order: App previews always appear before screenshots on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV — even if you reorder them in your app record. If a preview video uses an aspect ratio different from your screenshots, it appears in the “A Closer Look” section of your product page instead.
-
File formats: .mov, .m4v, .mp4 (H.264); .mov for ProRes 422 (HQ only).
-
Poster frame: You choose the image shown on the product page and during app install. Learn how to set the poster frame.
-
Processing time: Up to 24 hours after upload.
-
iMessage: App previews are not available for apps on the App Store for iMessage.
-
Orientation:
-
iOS apps: Landscape or Portrait (rotates to original orientation on play)
-
macOS, tvOS, visionOS apps: Landscape only
-
-
Scaling: If your app's user interface is the same across multiple device sizes and localizations, provide only the highest resolution required. They automatically scale down to smaller device sizes.
-
Unscaled versions: If you prefer not to use scaled versions, you can add specific screenshots and app previews for other device sizes and localizations. If a localized app preview is missing for your localized metadata, the app preview in the next best available language is used on App Store product pages and displayed to users when they install your app.

App Preview resolutions
Device resolution is the screen resolution of the physical device itself. Accepted resolution is the resolution App Store Connect actually accepts for your app preview file — because most app previews are recorded via screen recording rather than rendered at native resolution, App Store Connect accepts a defined set of standard portrait or landscape resolutions per display size instead of requiring an exact per-device match. Use the accepted resolution — not the device resolution — when preparing your video file.
